You can get big
lifting heavy

Heavy fives for strength, light twelves for size. That line is mostly myth. Muscle grows from hard sets, and heavy sets count, as long as there are enough of them.

Sections

What builds muscle

Hard sets, close to failure, enough of them each week. Anywhere from about 5 to 30 reps works if the set is hard.

Where heavy falls short

Very heavy work, triples and singles, is tiring for few sets. You run out of recovery before you run up enough sets. That’s the only catch.

Four rules

  1. 01

    Count hard sets

About 10 to 20 a week per muscle group is a good range.

  2. 02

Stop one or two reps short

Close enough to count, far enough to recover.

  3. 03

    Eat enough

Size needs food. No program fixes that.

  4. 04

    Be patient

Muscle comes over months, not weeks.

Size and strength aren’t opposites. Bigger muscles have more room to get strong.

How Compound handles it

Compound’s Bodybuilding goal is built around volume, not a max.

Bodybuilding

A goal for size

The Bodybuilding goal runs 8 or 12 weeks of build phases, with no max-based main lifts. It’s Compound Pro, which comes with two weeks free.

Deload

Planned in

Bodybuilding has its deload weeks written in from the start: week 8 of an 8-week program, weeks 6 and 12 of a 12-week one.

RPE

Log the count

Log Easy, Hard or an RPE. With Pro, the next set moves about 3% per RPE point, capped at a tenth, for today only.
