Coach’s notes · After a linear program

Stop resetting
the same weight

Fail 100 kg three times, drop 10%, work back up, fail 100 kg again. One reset is a tool. The third is a sign the program has done its job.

What a reset is for

On a linear program a reset clears fatigue and gives you a run-up. It works, once or twice. Each time, you get back to the same weight and a bit further, if you’re lucky.

That’s weeks of training for nothing. The program needs more recovery between hard sessions than it allows.

What to do instead

  1. 01

    Move to weekly progression

Heavy day goes up each week. The other days support it.

  2. 02

    Add a lighter day

Squat 3 × 5 at 90 kg on Wednesday instead of 100 kg.

  3. 03

    Take smaller jumps

2.5 kg a week on squat, 1.25 kg if you can load it on press.

  4. 04

    Plan a lighter week

Every four to six weeks, before you need one.

More on that in StrongLifts didn’t fail you. It finished.

How Compound handles it

Compound spots a stall and has a program for the next speed.

Stall

Three flat weeks

Compound calls a lift stalled when the same work has been flat for three program weeks. Progress shows the stall with its cause and a Why. Free.

Free

Three starters

5×5 linear, Texas Method and three-tier linear are free. So is every Why.

Pro

An offer, not a shrug

When a lift stalls, Pro comes with an offer to change the program. Pro comes with two weeks free.
