Lifting in
your 40s

Lifting at 45 gets written up as heroic. It isn’t. It’s training. You can still get stronger for years. You just have less room for sloppy planning.

What changes

What doesn’t

Muscle and strength still respond to hard, consistent training. The rules are the same. The margins are smaller.

A sensible week

DayMain work
MondaySquat 3 × 5, bench 3 × 6
WednesdayDeadlift 2 × 5, press 3 × 6
FridaySquat lighter 3 × 5, bench 3 × 8

Five rules

  1. 01

    Three days is plenty

    Quality over frequency.

  2. 02

    Lighter weeks more often

    Every four or five weeks.

  3. 03

    Longer warm-ups

Ten minutes and a ramp of lighter sets before the work.

  4. 04

    Fewer grinders

Most sets end at RPE 7 or 8.

  5. 05

    Small jumps

2.5 kg at a time, and patience.

How Compound handles it

Compound plans the lighter weeks in and adjusts from what you log.

Deload

Planned in

Every goal program has its deload weeks written in from the start, such as week 4 of an 8-week program.

Reload

When things slip

If two or more lifts from two families slip within two weeks, Pro programs a Reload week. You can undo it.

RPE

Log the count

Log Easy, Hard or an RPE. With Pro, the next set moves about 3% per RPE point, capped at a tenth, for today only.
